Plutonium Futures the science 2026

Edinburgh, UK

13th – 17th September

Plutonium Futures – The Science is a topical conference that provides an international forum for the presentation and discussion of current research on physical and chemical properties of plutonium and other actinide elements, supporting safe and secure research as part of the global energy mix.

By bringing people of diverse disciplines together, the conference aims to enhance the dialogue among scientists and engineers on the fundamental properties of plutonium and other actinide elements, and their technological consequences.

The 2026 edition organised by AWE – Nuclear Security Technologies will be held at Murrayfield stadium in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, is a compact and historic city. Its famous castle sits atop the remains of an ancient volcano, with old streets dating back to medieval times winding around it. An elegant Georgian ‘New Town’ extends the ancient city to the south of the castle keep. Other local attractions include the Royal Yacht Britannia in Leith, many varied museums and, when the weather is kind, panoramic views from the tops of other volcanic remnants such as Arthur’s Seat and Observatory Hill. The many cafes, restaurants and bars offer tempting selections of savoury meals, cakes and, of course, a huge range of Scottish whiskies to explore.

Scottish Gas Murrayfield is Scotland’s biggest stadium, with a capacity of over 67 thousand. The stadium celebrated its opening on the 21st of April 1925, when Scotland won a Grand Slam with a victory over the 'Auld Enemy' England. Outside of Rugby Union, the stadium has also welcomed many famous musicians, groups and, in 1982, the Pope. The musicians who have graced our stage include One Direction, Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, Robbie Williams, Madonna and, on two occasions, the Rolling Stones. The dedicated conference venue provides all the space and amenities to host the 2026 Pu Futures Conference.

The conference will include:

• A welcome reception on Sunday evening to allow for participants to meet and register,

• A poster session during an extended lunch break to increase opportunities for non-speaker participation,

• An evening of a traditional Scottish activity,

• A banquet reception in the evening,

• Joint-session plenary talks, and

• Parallel session invited/contributed talks.

Edinburgh can be easily reached by air and by rail. The city airport provides both national and international links and has an excellent and frequent tram service linking it directly to the city centre and includes a stop directly outside Murrayfield stadium. Waverley, the city’s central main rail station, has services with many UK towns and cities, including high speed links to Glasgow and London. Parking can be difficult in the city, but its compact size and excellent tram and bus services make getting around without a car very easy. Just make sure to bring warm and waterproof clothes as Scotland’s weather is notoriously variable at any time of year.
